In short
- Assess the files first: original quality, sound, length and format.
- Check you have permission to use clips from guests and other people.
- Decide the finished video you need before judging whether the footage is enough.
- Keep the original files untouched and ask for them in full quality.
Often yes, once you check the quality of the files, whether you have permission to use them and what finished video you need. Then decide whether the footage is enough.
Why mixed footage is harder
Footage from a professional camera, a guest’s phone and a second device does not match. The picture size, colour, sound and frame rate can all differ. A phone held upright adds another shape.
None of this makes the job impossible. It does mean the editor needs time to match clips, and some clips may be better left out.
Step 1: Check the files
Before agreeing to a job, check these points:
- Originals: do you have the files straight from the device, not copies sent through a chat app?
- Sound: is the voice clear on at least one clip for each key moment?
- Length and coverage: do the clips together cover the main moments?
- Format: are all files playable, and are any damaged or incomplete?
- Shaky or dark clips: are they useful, or only background?
A short sample from each device helps. Our guide on colour and sound adjustments explains what can and cannot be improved.
Step 2: Check permissions
Clips from guests are not automatically yours to use. Ask each person who filmed whether they are happy for the clip to be used, and for what. Think also about the people who appear in the clips, particularly children, and where the finished video will be shown.
Our filming and publication responsibilities checklist helps you list who needs to agree. Music playing in the background can raise separate questions, so ask before posting publicly.
Step 3: Decide the outcome
Be clear about what you want to end up with. A 2-minute recap is easier to build from scattered clips than a full, smooth record of a three-hour programme. Also decide who will use it: family only, a team, or the public.
What can and cannot be rescued
| Situation | Often workable | Hard or not possible |
|---|---|---|
| Several phones at the same moment | Switching angles for variety | Perfect match in colour and sound |
| One clear voice clip plus other shots | Using the clear voice with other pictures | Using voice from a shaky distant clip |
| Compressed or forwarded files | A short recap | A large-screen showing at high quality |
| Dark room footage | Brightening within limits | Restoring lost detail |
| A key moment never filmed | Photos or titles to mark it | Creating the moment itself |
A worked example
For example, a family has clips of a 60th birthday dinner: one camera on a tripod, five phone clips from guests and a few photos. The speech was recorded well on the camera, while the cake cutting is only on two phones.
The editor suggests a 3-minute film. It uses the camera’s speech for the voice and the phone clips for reactions and the cake cutting. Each guest is asked for permission, and the original files are sent by a cloud folder. This is an illustration, not a real job.
When the footage falls short
If a key sound is missing or a shot is badly blurred, the best result may be a shorter, simpler film. If a lot of work is needed to match clips, that may affect the scope, depending on your agreement.
What we confirm for your event
- A look at your samples before we agree to the edit.
- What we need from you: originals, a list of key moments and guest permissions.
- The length and quality that is realistic from your clips.
- The alternatives where something is missing, such as photos, titles or sound.
Use the revision planner to organise your notes. If the real problem is a moment that was never recorded, read when essential footage is missing. If it is long after the event, see requesting a new edit months after the event. To discuss your footage, see event video editing.
If you have a folder of clips from different devices, send us a short description and a few samples. We will tell you what looks workable, what looks risky and what we need from you to start.
