Filming cycling events along an approved route

Your race runs along a long route, and you need to know which parts can be filmed safely.

Share your date and area, and we will suggest coverage and confirm what is possible.

In short

  • A moving race cannot be covered everywhere, so choose fixed points on the route first.
  • Start, climbs, turns, finish and prizegiving each show a different side of the event.
  • Only film from places and vehicles the organiser has approved for safety.
  • Drone and moving-vehicle shots depend on approvals first.

For a cycling event, choose a few fixed points on the route first, then add moving shots only if the organiser’s safety arrangements allow them. A race is long and fast, so a crew films chosen points rather than every kilometre.

Which parts of a cycling event are worth filming?

Each point on the route tells a different part of the story. Pick the ones that matter most to your purpose.

Point What it shows What to confirm
Start Riders gathered, nerves, the flag-off Where the crew may stand without blocking riders
Climb or scenic section Effort, landscape, the field stretching out Access, parking and walking time to the spot
Turn or feed zone Riders slowing, helpers, close detail Whether the area is open to filming
Finish line Arrival, reactions, results Position that does not block timing officials
Prizegiving Winners, sponsors, speeches Timing against the last finishers

If your race has finishers arriving for a long time, see how to prioritise race finishes and podium ceremonies.

Why choose fixed points?

Riders move fast along a route that may be many kilometres long. A camera at one spot sees each rider for only a few seconds. Moving between spots takes time, and roads may be closed or restricted to organiser vehicles.

Decide which points matter most to your purpose. Several spots on a loop course can be reused each lap. A point-to-point route needs separate crews at separate points. Our run-sheet filming planner helps you list each point with its time and who is responsible.

What about safety and approvals?

The organiser sets the safety arrangements for the route. These usually decide where the crew may stand, which vehicles may be on the course and which areas are closed. Filming follows them, and we film only from positions the organiser has approved.

Ask the organiser early for these in writing:

  1. Where crew may stand and which areas are off limits.
  2. Whether any camera vehicle or motorbike is allowed, and who rides or drives.
  3. Whether road or land owners need to give permission for filming.
  4. Whether marshals or officials need to be informed of the crew’s positions.

Moving vehicle shots and drone footage are conditional. They can be arranged once approvals are in place, and we confirm them for your event. Our drones guide explains how approval works.

An illustrative plan

For example, imagine a 60 km road ride with a start, one climb, a turnaround and a finish in the same town. With a small crew, a plan might look like this. This is an illustration, not a past job.

  • One camera at the start, then the crew moves to the climb.
  • A second position at the turnaround where riders slow down.
  • The finish line, with a crew member kept free for interviews with finishers.
  • A final spot at the prizegiving.

If several categories start at different times, you may need a second crew so one group is not missed. The simultaneous coverage planner helps you test this.

What we confirm for your event

  • We choose the route points with you and explain why each one is covered.
  • We tell you what we need from the organiser to film from each point.
  • We plan for a route change or a closed section, and for rain, which changes both the race and the footage.
  • We agree the outputs, such as a highlight film and short clips for social media.

Where we can help

We film sports events across Malaysia and plan around the organiser’s safety instructions. See our sports event videography service, or return to the sports and active events guide for the other decisions that come with a race.

If you have the route map and the organiser's safety instructions, we can suggest which points to cover and what each one needs. Send the date, route and event type, and we will check what is possible.

Questions people ask

Can the crew follow the riders along the whole route?
Not usually. Following a race means a vehicle or motorbike on the course, and that depends on the organiser's safety arrangements and permissions for the route. Fixed positions at chosen points are more reliable.
Which parts of a race are best to film?
Start, a scenic or difficult section, a turning point, the finish line and the prizegiving cover most stories. Riders pass a fixed camera quickly, so several well-chosen spots give more variety than one long stretch.
Do you need the route map before quoting?
It helps a lot. A route map with the start, finish, key points and approximate timings lets us plan crew positions and travel. If the route is not final, send what you have and tell us which parts may change.
Can a drone be used for cycling events?
A drone needs approvals first and depends on the area and weather. For a drone request we also plan ground shots. Raise it early so approvals are in time.
What if the race has several categories starting at different times?
List each category with its start time and expected finish window. This lets us decide which category to prioritise at each filming point, and whether a second crew is needed so no important group is missed.
