Filming stand-up comedy and spoken-word nights

Your performers speak directly to a live crowd, and you need to know what can be shared.

Share your date and area, and we will suggest coverage and confirm what is possible.

In short

  • Each performer decides whether their set is filmed and whether it is released.
  • Audience members can appear on camera, so the entry notice matters.
  • Recording a set and releasing a clip are two separate approvals.
  • Material from other writers, music or sketches may need its own permission.

Treat recording and releasing as two separate decisions. A performer may agree to be filmed for the organiser’s archive and still not want a clip posted online. Settle both, in writing, for each act, before the show.

Why comedy and spoken word need extra care

A band plays a song. A comedian or poet speaks, often about real people, real events and sometimes sensitive topics, and often to the audience itself. Words are the product, and a clip taken out of context can mean something different from the full set.

That is why the performer’s wishes come first, and why the approval step matters more than for most events.

Decide per act

Use a simple table for the line-up. Fill it in before the show.

Act Recorded? Released? Which clips? Who approves
Host Yes Yes Intro and links Organiser
Performer A Yes Archive only None Performer A
Performer B Yes Yes One clip, chosen by performer Performer B
Open-mic slots Ask on the night No None Each performer

This is an illustration. Your own table will match your line-up. For open-mic or guest slots, ask each person as they sign up.

Audience interaction

Many comedy sets involve talking to the crowd. A close-up of a guest, or a clear moment of someone answering, can identify that person.

  • Put a notice on tickets, at the entrance and in the announcements that filming is taking place.
  • Tell the crew whether to avoid close shots of audience members.
  • Decide how to deal with a guest who asks not to be filmed, such as seating them out of the camera’s view.
  • Remember that sound also records people in the crowd.

Our permissions, privacy and responsible publication guides explain the questions to ask, and our responsibilities checklist lists who is responsible for what.

Material that may belong to others

Some sets include a song, a poem by another writer, a sketch or branded material.

Releasing a recording can be different from performing it live. Ask performers whether their material needs permission to be recorded and shared, and ask the organiser to confirm. Where unsure, keep the recording private until it is settled.

From recording to clip

A clean clip process looks like this:

  1. The performer agrees to recording, and to release if they wish.
  2. The crew records the complete set.
  3. The editor suggests clips, or the performer chooses them.
  4. The performer and organiser approve each clip, including the title and caption.
  5. The clip is released in the agreed format.

Sound matters most

In comedy, a line that cannot be heard is lost. We confirm how each microphone and the room are recorded, and whether laughter is captured. Good audio also helps if captions are needed.

If a performer changes their mind

A performer may withdraw consent after seeing the recording. Agree early how such a request is handled and until when it can be made, so everyone knows where things stand before a clip is shared.

What we confirm for your event

  • How each performer is recorded cleanly, including guest or open-mic slots.
  • How we handle a guest who asks not to be filmed.
  • Who approves a clip before it is released.
  • Whether the complete recordings are kept private.

Questions people ask

Do performers need to agree before their set is filmed?
Yes. Ask each performer, before the show, whether they agree to be recorded, and whether the recording may be shared. Some are happy for the organiser to keep an archive but not to post online. Write each answer down.
What about audience members who appear in the video?
Audiences can be seen and heard, especially when a performer speaks to someone directly. Tell guests at the door or on the ticket that filming is taking place, and agree with the crew how to treat close-ups of individuals.
Can a short clip be posted straight after the show?
It can, if the performer and organiser have approved it in advance. A same-day edit or social clip is available on request, confirmed for each event. The approval step needs time, so plan it before the night.
Who owns the jokes or poems in the video?
Usually the writer or performer, but it depends on the arrangement. If material comes from other writers, or uses music or sketches, check the rights before release. Ask the organiser and performers to confirm in writing.
