In short
- Plan coverage per discipline: swim, first transition, bike, second transition and run.
- The water, transition area and closed roads are controlled by your safety team and officials.
- A crew on land sees the swim only from the shore unless your organiser provides a safe boat position.
- Drone footage needs approval first, so we plan ground shots as well.
To plan video for a triathlon, split the day into its parts: swim, first transition, bike, second transition and run. Decide what you need from each part, then check which areas the crew is allowed into. Your safety team and race officials decide access.
How should you split coverage by discipline?
Each discipline needs different positions and has different limits.
| Part of the race | What is worth filming | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Swim start and swim | Mass start, first buoy, swim exit | Shore positions, safety boats, whether a boat position exists |
| Transition 1 | Athletes changing, bikes leaving | Who is allowed in, passes, athletes’ privacy |
| Bike | Course scenery, climbs, turnarounds | Closed roads, safe stopping points, marshal instructions |
| Transition 2 | Bikes returning, athletes starting the run | Same as the first transition |
| Run | Course, aid stations, spectators | Positions along the route and approvals |
| Finish and prizegiving | Finish line, medals, families | See prioritising race finishes and podium ceremonies |
Not every part needs full coverage. A common plan is to film the swim start, one point on the bike, both transitions, the run and the finish. Our simultaneous coverage planner helps you see which parts overlap in time.
Which areas are restricted?
Expect these to be controlled, and ask the officials in writing:
- The water: safety boats and swimmers are the priority. A crew needs a clear invitation to be on or near the water.
- Transition areas: equipment is stored here and entry is normally limited.
- Closed roads or trails: only marshals and approved vehicles may enter.
- Medical and recovery areas: these are usually private.
If a position is not allowed, we plan another angle. We follow your officials’ instructions on the day.
How does the weather affect the plan?
Open-water events are weather-sensitive. A swim can be shortened, changed or cancelled for safety, and the schedule may shift. Agree in advance who tells the crew about changes, and what to film instead. The weather and venue-change filming plan helps you write it down.
What about drone footage?
A drone gives a clear view of a swim or a bike course, but it is a conditional option. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia advises standard drone applications at least 14 working days before the activity, and Sabah and Sarawak need additional authorisation (CAAM, accessed 2026-10-06).
For a drone request we also plan ground shots. See the drone guide and the drone planning checklist.
How many cameras do you need?
The answer depends on your timetable and route. A small event might use one crew moving between a few points. A larger event may need separate operators for the swim, the bike course and the finish. Multi-camera event recording covers the separate points at the same time.
It is available on request and confirmed for each event.
What we confirm for your event
- The points we propose for each discipline, and why.
- How we film the swim if no boat position is possible.
- Which areas need passes or approvals, and who arranges them.
- The plan if the swim is changed or the weather turns.
- The outputs you receive, such as a highlight film, full finish coverage or short social clips.
- Tell us the venue and date, and we confirm the crew and travel.
The number of filming points and operators moves the quote; see pricing.
Use the run-sheet filming planner to mark each filming point against your race schedule.
Our running and race-event videography and sports event videography pages explain what we can cover. More topics are in the sports and active events guides.
Send us the race date, the venue and your timetable for each discipline. We will suggest which points to film, which need approval, and what to confirm with your safety team.
