In short
- The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage area, so ask each spot about filming rules.
- The Portuguese Settlement's June festival draws large crowds to a seafront village.
- Plan the route your guests take before you plan camera positions.
Melaka City is where the heritage core, the seafront and most hotels sit within a short drive of each other. Plan from the route your guests take, then choose camera positions.
What makes the heritage centre different?
The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It includes the Stadthuys and Christ Church, and Jonker Street is close by. These are busy public places with narrow streets and visitors all day.
That changes how a crew sets up, where it can stand and how fast it can move. Ask the venue owner or the local council about filming, lights and equipment at your exact spot. Our guide to filming in a heritage building lists what to ask.
What if your event is in the Portuguese Settlement?
The Portuguese Settlement is a seafront village in Ujong Pasir, home to the Kristang community, who have their own language. Its main festival runs from 23 to 29 June and ends on the feast of Saint Peter, the fishermen’s patron saint. One source says it draws about 100,000 visitors, and the blessing of decorated fishing boats is a key moment.
For a family event or festival here, ask where cameras may stand when the crowd is largest, which moments happen on the water and at what time, and who in the community is happy to be filmed.
Plan boat moments against a clear timetable, because wind and glare on the water affect sound and exposure.
How do I plan an event with several nearby locations?
Write the day as a list of moves: where guests start, where they go next, and the time between.
| Question | Why it matters for filming |
|---|---|
| Where does each part happen? | Each place may need its own setup and approval |
| How do guests travel between them? | The crew must reach the next place before the moment starts |
| Which moments must be captured? | A must-capture moments list keeps the crew focused |
| Is any part outdoors? | Heat and sudden rain can force a change of plan |
A run-sheet filming planner turns this into a schedule we can quote from. If two things happen at once in different places, see the simultaneous coverage planner.
What should I check before the day?
- Whether each venue needs notice or approval for filming, and who to speak to.
- Where equipment can be unloaded and parked near the heritage streets.
- Whether the hotel’s sound system has an audio feed we can record.
- An indoor backup for any outdoor moment.
- For aerial shots, drone applications go to CAAM (Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia) at least 14 working days ahead, and approval is not certain. See our drone guide.
The venue filming questions checklist has more questions to send to the venue.
What should you send us?
Tell us the date, the venues, the order of the day and what you want to keep afterwards. An enquiry does not reserve your date; a booking follows agreed scope and terms.
For the wider picture, see event videography in Melaka. Convention-hall events are covered on the Ayer Keroh page. For outstation costs, use the outstation filming budget worksheet.
Send us the venues, the date and the order of the day. We confirm the crew and what travel is involved.
