In short
- An export is the same edit saved in another format. A new edit changes what is shown, in what order or for whom.
- Different shape, size or file type is usually an export. Different story, length or audience is usually a new edit.
- Subtitles, logos and music changes can sit in between, so we classify each one in your quote.
- Every version you want is written into the quotation before the edit starts.
An extra video is an export when it is the same edit saved in another shape, size or file type. It is a new edit when someone has to choose different shots, change the order or tell a different story. We classify each version you want and write it into the quotation.
What makes something an export
An export takes a finished film and delivers it differently. The pictures, order and length stay the same. Typical examples are another file type, another resolution, or a copy for a screen that needs a different format.
Exports are small jobs because the creative decisions were already made. Even so, the quotation shows whether each one is in the main price or listed separately, so a long list of exports holds no surprises.
What makes something a new edit
A new edit means choosing again. The editor goes back to the footage, selects different moments and builds a different film. Common cases:
- A shorter cut for a different audience.
- A version that focuses on one speaker, one team or one segment.
- A film made for a sponsor, a school, a board or a family branch.
- A cut re-ordered for a new purpose, such as a recruitment video.
These are not copies. They are new films from the same material, and they take editing time. Our guide to filming, crew and editing hours explains why editing is often quoted per finished film.
Where the line gets blurry
| Request | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same film, another file type | Export | No creative change |
| Same film, lower resolution for email | Export | Same edit, smaller file |
| Same film with a different logo or end card | Export, with a small change | Needs a quick revision, not a re-edit |
| Same film with captions | Separate item | Text must be prepared and checked |
| Square or vertical version of a wide film | Depends | Cropping may work, reframing may not |
| Shorter cut | New edit | You choose what to keep |
| Film for a different audience | New edit | Different story and selection |
| Music change | Depends | May need re-timing of the cuts |
Use this table as a starting point. Your footage decides the real answer, so we check each version against it. For captions, see the captions and translation pricing guide.
A worked example, clearly illustrative
Imagine a company dinner with a main highlight film. This is an illustration, not a real order. The organiser then asks for these extras:
- The film as a file for the venue screen and another for email.
- A vertical cut for social media.
- A short film for the sponsor, using only the segments featuring them.
- English captions.
Item 1 is an export. Item 2 is an export if the framing works, and partly a new edit if it does not. Item 3 is a new edit. Item 4 is a separate captioning task.
An organiser who sees this list before booking knows what to ask for and can compare quotes line by line. The video deliverables sheet is built for this kind of list.
What to agree before the edit starts
Write each version as a line with its format, length, audience, language and delivery file. Add whether it is an export or a new edit. If you may want more later, we state how added versions are quoted and who approves them.
Changes after the first edit are a separate matter, handled through review rounds. The revision planner helps you keep feedback in one place. For vertical and square versions, see the format and framing planner.
What we confirm for your event
- Export or new edit: which of your requested versions is which.
- Exports: in the main price or listed separately.
- Shorter cuts and other audiences: quoted as their own lines.
- Versions after delivery: how a later request is handled and priced.
- The list: each version on its own line in the quotation.
For the clips made for posting online, see event social video clips. For the main film, see event highlight films.
Send us your list
Send the versions you may want for your event videography and we will mark which are exports and which are new edits.
Tell us every film and version you may want, including the platforms and audiences. We will list which are exports of one edit and which need new editing, so the scope is clear before you decide.
