Filming your event in Sabah, from coast to highlands

Your event is in Kota Kinabalu, the highlands or the east coast, and you wonder what changes.

Share your date and area, and we will suggest coverage and confirm what is possible.

In short

  • Sabah events fall into four settings: city hotels and halls, highlands, district towns and islands.
  • The venue decides how the crew and kit travel: by air, by road or by boat.
  • Drone filming in Sabah needs extra authorisation on top of the standard national application.
  • Sabah Parks lists its own application steps for filming inside its parks.

Event videography in Sabah is planned by setting, not by state. A hotel ballroom in Kota Kinabalu, a retreat in Kundasang and a resort near Semporna need three different plans.

What kinds of settings does Sabah have?

Setting Typical events Key question Place page
City hotels and convention halls Conferences, annual dinners, product launches Which rooms, and who approves filming? Kota Kinabalu
Highlands Retreats, weddings, company trips What is the covered plan if it rains? Kundasang
Community districts Family weddings, church and harvest festival events Which moments stay private? Penampang
East coast towns Corporate events, school events, weddings How do the crew and files travel? Sandakan, Tawau
Islands off the east coast Resort weddings, retreats Which boat, and what can it carry? Semporna

Other districts such as Tuaran, Papar, Kota Belud, Keningau, Kudat and Lahad Datu follow the same questions.

How do the crew and kit get to a Sabah venue?

Kota Kinabalu has the main airport. Tawau and Sandakan have their own airports, with flights to Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kuala Lumpur. From there, roads and boats take over. On the east coast, one highway links Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu to Sandakan, so a multi-town job is a long drive.

Tell us how your guests arrive and we plan the crew’s route to match. For travel items in a quote, see the outstation filming budget worksheet and the guide on local or travelling crew.

Which approvals are worth asking about?

For drones, CAAM (Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia) asks for standard applications at least 14 working days before the activity, with additional authorisation in Sabah and Sarawak. Read the Sabah drone planning questions before you promise guests aerial shots.

Sabah Parks runs parks such as Kinabalu Park, Tawau Hills Park and the marine parks off Semporna. Its filming page lists a formal application at least 14 days ahead, approvals from other agencies, and a fee line for professional or commercial camera use. Ask the park office how an event recording is treated. Our guide on permits for destination filming lists what else to check.

What do you settle before booking?

  • The exact venue, and whether it is on the mainland, inland or on an island.
  • Who approves filming at the venue, and whether a park office is involved.
  • Whether the speakers’ sound can be taken from the venue’s sound system.
  • The backup if a boat, road or flight changes, and the rain plan.
  • Who speaks, and in which languages. Sabah events often mix Malay, English, Mandarin, Hakka and community languages, so captions are worth planning early.

The venue questions guide gives wording you can send the venue. You may also want a drone shot or a livestream.

How do you send an enquiry for Sabah?

Send the date, venue, event type and the films you want. A date is confirmed once scope and terms are agreed. The tool Build an event video brief you can send turns your plans into a message. For the core service, see event videography across Malaysia.

Planning a trip across Borneo? See Sarawak, and Labuan, the federal territory off Sabah’s coast.

Tell us the venue and date, and we confirm the crew and travel for Sabah.

Questions people ask

What is the nearest big town to my Sabah venue?
Kota Kinabalu is the main airport and hotel centre on the west coast. On the east coast, Sandakan and Tawau have their own airports. Tell us the village or venue and how guests arrive, and we plan the crew's route from there.
Does filming at a Sabah Parks site need approval?
Sabah Parks asks for a formal application at least 14 days before filming, and lists fees for commercial camera use. Ask the park office whether an event recording counts, and send us the reply so we can plan around it.
Can a drone fly at my Sabah event?
Drone shots can be arranged on request. CAAM adds an extra authorisation step in Sabah, and standard applications go in at least 14 working days ahead. For a drone request we also plan ground shots.
My guests speak Kadazan-Dusun, Hakka, Malay and English. Can the film handle that?
Yes. Tell us who speaks and in which language. Captions and translated subtitles can be arranged, ideally with a fluent speaker checking the text.
