In short
- Kota Kinabalu is Sabah's capital and main airport, so most large Sabah events are held here.
- A convention centre means several rooms under one set of venue rules.
- Island trips now leave from the South Jetty, with set hours that decide your filming window.
Kota Kinabalu is where most large events in Sabah are held. A waterfront convention, a hotel ballroom and an island day each need their own filming plan, so tell us which one you have.
What changes when the venue is a convention centre?
The Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) is on the waterfront in the central business district. Its website lists large halls, flexible meeting rooms, outdoor plazas and audio-visual (AV) facilities. SICC is also the exclusive caterer inside the venue.
That means one building, many rooms and one set of rules. Ask the venue:
- Does commercial filming need advance notice or approval?
- Where may cameras, tripods and cables go in each hall?
- Can the venue give a sound feed we can record from?
- When can the crew load in, and by which entrance?
- Who manages the outdoor plazas if the programme uses them?
Our guide on filming in a convention centre with multiple halls explains how a crew splits across rooms. For a hotel dinner, read filming in a hotel ballroom.
How do island trips work from Kota Kinabalu?
Boats to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park now leave from the South Jetty at Kota Kinabalu Port, on Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens. The terminal’s site calls this a temporary site while the Jesselton dockland is redeveloped, and lists hours of 7:30 am to 5:00 pm daily. Older guides may still name Jesselton Point, so give the crew the current address.
Equipment travels by boat, so the last departure sets your filming window. Ask the operator what luggage a boat carries and when the last boat returns. Our guide on booking video for an island event with limited transport windows covers the timetable.
What does the weather mean for a Kota Kinabalu event?
The city is hot and humid all year. October is the wettest month, and February and March are the driest. For a waterfront or island programme in the wet months, agree a covered area with the venue, and read weather planning for an event videography booking.
A short checklist
- The exact venue, rooms and date
- The programme times, with the moments you must have on film
- Languages on stage: Malay, English, Mandarin, Hakka and Kadazan-Dusun are all common in the city
- Who at the venue approves filming and sound access
- A rain or delay plan for any outdoor or island part
- A same-day or next-day edit, and the deadline. See next-morning delivery versus an on-site same-day edit
Where do you start?
Send the venue, date and rooms. Write your scope first with the event video brief builder. For a family or community event just south of the city, see Penampang. The Sabah overview compares all settings, and our event videography service lists what we film.
Send us the venue, the date and the rooms in use, and we confirm the crew and travel.
