In short
- Kota Belud is about halfway along the highway between Kota Kinabalu and Kudat.
- The tamu (open-air market) runs every Sunday, and Tamu Besar is the big annual edition.
- Bajau and Dusun families lead many events, so agree what may be filmed with the host first.
Kota Belud is roughly halfway between Kota Kinabalu and Kudat. It is known for its weekly tamu and for Bajau horsemen, so the questions are about market days, community permission and crowds.
What is different about filming in Kota Belud?
Tamu every Sunday. The tamu is the town’s best-known gathering, and it fills the centre on Sunday mornings. If your wedding or gathering is in town that day, ask the venue about drop-off, parking and the best arrival time.
Tamu Besar and the horsemen. Once a year, the tamu grows into Tamu Besar, a two-day weekend festival with a cultural parade, handicraft displays and Bajau horsemen riding decorated horses. If you are filming the festival for a community, tourism or company brief, ask the organiser about filming access, parade times and where cameras may stand. If your own event falls on that weekend, ask about roads and rooms early.
Bajau and Dusun customs. The town is mainly Bajau-Sama, including Illanun, and Dusun. Weddings and community events follow family and village customs, so ask the host which moments may be filmed and who decides on the day. Our community event videography page explains how we plan this, and the guide to filming processions and moving community events helps if your event moves between places.
Which events are common in Kota Belud?
Weddings, family gatherings, school and village events, and the market-linked festivals are the usual settings. Many take place in halls, village grounds, fields or along the roadside, so shade, sound and a safe place for the crew to stand matter more than a ballroom plan.
What should you check before you enquire?
- The venue or village, and the road your guests will use.
- Whether your date is a Tamu Besar weekend.
- Who approves filming for the ceremony, parade or festival.
- A shaded or roofed spot, as parades and fields are exposed. See filming an outdoor event with a wet-weather plan.
- Whether you want drone footage. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) says Sabah needs extra authorisation, so read the Sabah drone questions first.
