Filming a Semporna event, on land or island

Your event is in Semporna or on a nearby island, and you wonder what the sea changes.

Share your date and area, and we will suggest coverage and confirm what is possible.

In short

  • First settle whether the venue is in Semporna town or on an island. That one answer decides most of the plan.
  • Island events follow boat times, so the programme and the crew's call time must fit them.
  • Regatta Lepa, the Bajau boat festival, moves between years: the 2026 edition ran in late June.
  • Ask the resort or operator what baggage a boat carries and whether filming needs approval.

Event videography in Semporna starts with one question: is the venue in town or on an island? A hall in Semporna can be planned like any district event. An island resort adds boats, baggage limits and weather, so the plan is built around them.

What events are held in Semporna?

Semporna is a coastal district on Sabah’s east coast and a gateway to dive islands such as Sipadan and Mabul. Tun Sakaran Marine Park, run by Sabah Parks, lies off the coast.

Events here are often resort weddings, company retreats and family gatherings on or near the water. The Bajau community is large in the district, and some families live in houses over the sea. If your event is in or near one, ask the family or village head which parts may be filmed.

What does Regatta Lepa mean for your date?

Regatta Lepa is the Bajau boat festival, held in Semporna with a lepa boat parade, sea sports and a cultural night. Its dates change from year to year: the 2026 edition ran from 20 to 28 June, and exhibitions filled Padang Bandaran on 26 to 28 June.

If your event falls near the festival, ask about rooms, road access and parking first. If you want the festival itself filmed, ask the organiser which parts are open to a crew.

What changes for filming at sea?

The boat decides the day. Island guests and crew usually arrive on transfers arranged by the resort or operator. Ask for the boat times and work backwards: when must the crew leave, and can they set up before the first guests arrive? Our guide to booking video for an island event with limited transport windows shows how to build that timetable.

Kit has to fit the boat. Cameras, lights, sound gear and spare batteries are heavy. Ask the operator what a boat carries and whether a second trip is possible. A smaller kit is often the right plan for an island.

Sea and sky. Rain and rough water can move or cancel a boat. Agree a backup using our weather planning guide, and read filming a beach or island event for the on-site side.

What should you check before booking?

  • The exact venue: in town, on the mainland coast or on an island.
  • Who runs the boat, the schedule, and the baggage limit for equipment.
  • Whether the resort, Sabah Parks or the village needs to approve filming.
  • Whether the crew should stay overnight, and who arranges the room.
  • The wet-weather plan, and what happens if a boat cannot run.
  • Drone shots: CAAM says Sabah needs extra authorisation, so read the Sabah drone questions early. We also plan ground shots for the same moments.

How does an enquiry for Semporna work?

Send the venue, date, event type and the films you want. The outstation filming budget worksheet lists the items to expect in an outstation quote. For an island, boat legs and an overnight stay move the quote most, as the pricing page explains.

Questions people ask

Can an event on an island off Semporna be filmed?
Yes, on request. Tell us the island, the resort or boat operator and the date. We check the boat transfer, how much equipment can travel and whether the crew stays overnight, then quote from that.
Do I need permission to film in the Tun Sakaran Marine Park area?
It depends on the exact place. Sabah Parks manages the marine park, so ask the resort or Sabah Parks whether your plan needs approval and send us the reply. Drone flights need CAAM (Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia) approval, and Sabah adds an extra authorisation step.
When is Regatta Lepa in Semporna?
The date changes by year. The 31st edition in 2026 ran from 20 to 28 June, with exhibitions at Padang Bandaran on 26 to 28 June. If your event shares those days, expect crowded roads and rooms, and ask the organiser early about filming.
What happens if weather delays the boat?
Sea conditions can change a boat schedule, so we agree a backup before the day: an earlier crossing, an overnight stay or a shorter programme. Ask your resort what it does when boats cannot run.
