Retirement and farewell

Retirement and farewell celebration videography

Someone is leaving after many years, and you want their colleagues' and family's words kept.

Share your date and area, and we will suggest coverage and confirm what is possible.

In short

  • Messages can be spoken live, recorded in advance or written, and taking part is always optional.
  • An organiser plans who speaks, so the film is not built on surprise requests to camera.
  • Workplace and family versions can differ, and approvals are agreed first.
  • The film is a gift for the person leaving, so the tone is set with the organiser.

A retirement or farewell is a moment when people say things they do not always say at work or at home. We film it so those words are kept for the person leaving, and we plan carefully so nobody feels pushed to speak.

What we film, and for whom

We film farewells organised by a team, a department, a family or a group of friends, for example:

  • Workplace retirement lunches or dinners with speeches and a presentation of gifts.
  • Farewell gatherings for a colleague moving on, or an overseas posting.
  • Family retirement celebrations after a long working life.
  • School or community farewells for a teacher, leader or volunteer.

For company annual functions, see annual dinner videography.

How do we preserve messages without placing people under pressure?

The film is only as warm as the messages in it, and a pressured message rarely feels warm. A few choices help.

  1. Invite in advance. The organiser tells colleagues or relatives there is a message reel and makes taking part optional.
  2. Offer more than one way. A short live speech, a clip recorded earlier or a written note on screen. People pick what suits them.
  3. Set a quiet corner. If a message is recorded on the day, a calm space away from the crowd helps. See event interview filming.
  4. Keep it short. A few sentences is enough. A long script makes people nervous.
  5. Let people decline. No one should be asked on the spot, and the organiser can decide whether a message is used.

Our event interview schedule builder can help the organiser plan time slots for recorded messages.

Setting the tone

A farewell can be warm and light, or formal and reflective. Tell us which you want, because it shapes how messages are edited and how long each one runs. A humorous office send-off and a quiet family tribute are cut very differently.

Approvals and who sees the film

A workplace farewell can involve HR, a department head or a company communications team. A family farewell is simpler but may still involve private remarks. Agree before the day:

  • Who approves the final film.
  • Whether the film is shown only at the event, shared with the team or also posted.
  • Whether the person leaving would prefer something private.

The video decisions and approvals planner and the private and public video version planner can help.

What we agree before the day

  1. The run of the programme and when speeches are given.
  2. The people who matter, by role.
  3. The moments that must be captured, using the must-capture moments checklist.
  4. Sound for speeches, and whether a microphone is available.
  5. Whether anything is a surprise, and who is briefed.

What we confirm for your event

We agree the programme, the speakers and the surprise plan with the organiser before the day. Tell us the venue and date, and we confirm the crew and travel.

The quote moves with the hours, the camera operators, the films you choose and the amount of message editing; see how pricing works. Recorded messages are edited with the organiser’s review before the film is shown, and a message can be removed if someone changes their mind. Speeches are recorded in full, and the workplace and family versions are kept apart.

Tell us who is leaving, where the farewell will be held and who is organising it. We will suggest a plan for the speeches and messages and check whether we can film on your date.

Questions people ask

How do you collect messages without pressuring people?
The organiser invites people in advance and makes it clear that taking part is optional. Messages can be live speeches, short clips recorded earlier or written notes shown on screen. On the day we follow the organiser's invitations, so guests speak because they chose to.
Do you film retirements at a workplace as well as family farewells?
Yes. A company farewell and a family celebration have different approvals and audiences. Tell us which it is, who must approve the film and where it may be shown, and we plan accordingly.
Can the film be a surprise for the person retiring?
Yes, if the organiser plans for it. We are briefed privately, arrive without giving the surprise away and agree how to start. Who sees the film afterwards is decided with the organiser.
Can speeches be kept in full?
Yes. A short film cannot hold every speech, so ask for the speeches to be recorded in full as well. This is useful when the person leaving wants to rewatch kind words from long-time colleagues.
