In short
- Name one person who sends feedback to the editor, even if many people watch.
- Agree what matters most before the first draft, so later requests can be judged against it.
- Separate corrections of fact from matters of taste.
- Decide who has the last word on private or sensitive moments.
Choose one person to approve the film, and write down what matters most before anyone watches a draft. Then relatives can still share opinions, but only one set of changes reaches the editor.
Why family films need this
A wedding or family film is watched by people who love you and may remember the day differently. A parent wants the blessing kept whole. A sibling wants the funny speech. A grandparent wants everyone to look their best.
Each request is reasonable. Together, they can contradict each other, and the editor is left guessing. A clear approver prevents that.
The roles to settle first
| Role | What they do | Who it is often |
|---|---|---|
| Commissioner | Agrees the scope and priorities with the videographer | The couple, or the person organising the event |
| Approver | Gives the single set of changes and says when the film is final | Usually the commissioner |
| Advisers | Watch the draft and give notes to the approver | Parents, siblings, close friends |
| Elders or key persons | Confirm moments that touch their role, such as a blessing or a private ritual | Grandparents, officiants, family heads |
One person can hold more than one role. What matters is that everyone knows who sends feedback to the editor.
Write a short priority statement
Before the first draft, write three or four lines the whole family agrees on. For example:
- The full vows and the parents’ blessing stay complete in the full recording.
- The highlight film is short and for sharing with friends.
- Moments marked private are not in anything shared online.
When a new request comes in, the approver checks it against these lines. This turns an argument about taste into a simple question: does it fit what we agreed?
Separate facts from taste
A wrong name, a misspelled title or a missing relative is a correction of fact, and the approver should accept it quickly. A different song or a faster cut is a matter of taste, and it needs a decision. Our guide to checking names, titles and logos helps with the first kind.
A worked example
For example, a couple receive a first draft. The bride’s mother asks to add more of the tea ceremony. The groom’s brother asks to shorten it because the highlight is too long.
The couple, as approvers, check the priority statement. It says the highlight is short and for friends, while the tea ceremony is kept whole in the full recording. They ask for a small trim in the highlight and point to the full recording for the rest.
One message goes to the editor. This example is illustrative, not a real family.
Private and sensitive moments
Some moments belong to the family. Agree before the day or before editing which ones stay in the full recording only, which are left out, and who may change that decision. If there has been a bereavement or a delicate family situation, say so early, and the editor can plan around it.
What late changes involve
Only what was filmed can be edited in, and a long list of late changes can mean extra editing work, depending on your agreement. Our guide to revisions, corrections and scope-change charges explains how that is usually treated.
What we confirm for your event
- How feedback reaches us: one message, one document or one call, whichever suits your family.
- Whether the first draft is shared privately with a small group before anyone else sees it.
- How a correction of fact is handled compared with a new request.
To plan the review, use the revision planner or the approvals planner. For many viewpoints, see consolidating feedback from several people and how to give useful feedback on a draft. If you only have footage and need it edited, read about event video editing.
If your film is still to be edited, tell us who will watch the first version and who has the final say. We will build the review step into the plan so the feedback reaches us in one piece.
