In short
- Multi-camera can mean three different things: several angles, live switching, or separate files per camera.
- More cameras do not by themselves give you a live mix or raw files from each camera.
- Say how you will use the video first. Then choose the camera set-up.
- Ask for the crew count, the outputs and the file handover in writing.
Multi-camera is not one thing. It can mean several cameras recording different angles, a person switching between them live, or each camera saved as its own file. A quote that says only “multi-camera” leaves open which one you are getting.
Three meanings of multi-camera
| What it is | What it means | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Several angles recorded | Two or more cameras film at once. The editor chooses the best angle for each moment later. | An edited film or full recording with changing angles |
| Live switching | Someone cuts between cameras as it happens, for a livestream or a screen at the venue | A live picture, and usually a recording of the mixed result |
| Separate files per camera | Each camera is saved on its own, so it can be reused or re-edited | Raw footage from every camera, handed over as agreed |
These can be combined, but each one adds people, equipment and cost. Ask which of the three you are asking for, and which your supplier is quoting.
Which one do you need?
Start from how you will use the video, not from the number of cameras.
- A film to watch later: several angles recorded is usually enough. See multi-camera event recording for how we approach it.
- A live audience online or in another room: you need live switching. That belongs with livestreaming or a live feed to venue screens, and is available on request, confirmed for each event.
- Footage you or another editor will use again: ask for separate files per camera, and say so in the brief.
If you are unsure, the tool that finds which event videos you need helps you list the outputs you want first.
An illustrative example
Imagine a 300-guest annual dinner with a stage, a speech from the chairman and a performance. This is only an example.
- With one camera, the operator must choose between the speaker and the audience, and cannot move without missing something.
- With two cameras recording, one stays wide on the stage and one goes closer on the speaker, so the editor can show both without a gap.
- With live switching to a venue screen, a third person is needed to choose the picture as it happens.
- If the company wants the raw footage for its own video team, the separate files must be asked for and handed over as agreed.
The same dinner can be quoted in all four ways. The price and crew change with the choice, so the quote must say which one applies.
What is not automatically included
These are agreed separately from “multi-camera”:
- A live mix or broadcast to the internet.
- Raw footage from each camera.
- A separate operator for every camera. Some set-ups use a fixed camera that records without an operator.
- A longer edit or more finished films.
- Extra sound equipment. Clear audio is planned separately, see planning event audio.
When one camera is enough
More cameras suit events where two things happen at once, where the room is large, or where long speeches need cutaways. For a short ceremony with one focus, one camera may be the right choice. Our guide to single-camera coverage explains when.
What we confirm for your event
- How many cameras and how many operators.
- Whether any camera is fixed and unattended.
- Whether anyone switches live, and the fallback if it fails.
- Whether you receive each camera’s footage, and in what form.
- Where the cameras stand, agreed with the venue.
If you also want each camera recorded alongside a live feed, read booking isolated camera recordings as well as a live programme feed. To plan where cameras go, the simultaneous coverage planner helps.
The crew count and the handover of files go into your quote. Our event videography service page explains the wider scope.
Tell us the event, the venue and what you plan to do with the video. We will say which of the three meanings of multi-camera fits, and write it into the quote.
