In short
- Penang is the island plus Seberang Perai on the mainland. Each side gets its own plan.
- The ferry carries people, motorcycles and bicycles. Crew vehicles cross by bridge.
- Late September to November is the main wet season, so outdoor moments need a covered back-up.
- George Town Festival week and the St Anne's feast in Bukit Mertajam change roads and crowds.
Penang is one state in two parts, and the side your venue sits on decides how we plan the day. We ask early when the programme crosses the water.
Which Penang setting is your event in?
| Setting | Typical events | Key question | Place page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heritage core | Company dinners, clan and association events, weddings, festival programmes | Where can a vehicle stop to unload, and does the street or building need approval? | George Town |
| Airport and industrial side | Conferences, exhibitions, product launches, staff events | Is a separate sound feed available, and who approves the final film? | Bayan Lepas |
| Northern beach coast | Resort weddings, beach dinners, team getaways | Which covered space replaces the beach if it rains? | Batu Ferringhi, Tanjung Bungah |
| South-west countryside | Family gatherings, village and farm events | Where can the crew park, and where is power? | Balik Pulau |
| Mainland gateway | Community festivals, company events, days that continue on the island | Does any part of the day cross the water? | Butterworth |
| Mainland town | Church and temple occasions, family ceremonies, dinners | Which parts overlap and need a second operator? | Bukit Mertajam |
| Mainland township | Factory visits, product demonstrations, mall and stadium events | Who arranges site access and release forms? | Batu Kawan |
George Town is the state capital on the north-eastern corner of the island, and Penang International Airport is at the south-eastern tip, in Bayan Lepas.
How does the crew cross between island and mainland?
Two bridges join the sides: the Penang Bridge and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, also called the Second Bridge. The historic ferry runs between Butterworth and the Weld Quay terminal in George Town, daily from 06:30 to 23:30, every 20 or 30 minutes by Penang Port’s timetable.
The ferry fare list covers pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles only. So plan cases and vehicles over a bridge, and allow for traffic at the hour you will travel. Our guides on filming across a city and its surrounding districts and covering several nearby venues show how to time a split day.
What dates and seasons change a Penang plan?
The wet season. Late September to November is the main rainy period, so name a covered space for every outdoor moment. See weather planning for a videography booking and the weather and venue-change plan.
Festival weeks. The 2026 George Town Festival ran from 1 to 9 August, with projection mapping on the Penang Town Hall facade and programmes along Armenian Street and Beach Street. In Bukit Mertajam, the St Anne’s feast runs about ten days each July and closes roads on its final weekend.
Languages. Speeches in Penang often move between English, Malay, Mandarin, Hokkien and Tamil. Tell us who speaks and in which language, and read about subtitles for multilingual event videos.
What do we confirm for your Penang event?
- Which venues are on the island and which are on the mainland, with the time of each part.
- Loading point, power and sound feed at each venue. The venue filming questions checklist lists them.
- Whether a drone is wanted. Approval comes first, so we also plan ground shots. Read about drone lead time.
- The wet-weather plan and who decides to use it.
If your day runs into Kedah or Perak, see Kedah and Perak. Write your needs in the video brief builder, check cost items in the outstation filming budget worksheet, and read about event videography.
Tell us the venues, the date and whether the day stays on one side or crosses the water. We confirm the crew and the route.
