In short
- Butterworth is the mainland end of the ferry to George Town, beside the Penang Sentral transport hub.
- The ferry carries pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles, so vehicles and equipment cases cross by bridge.
- A split day is two setups and a transfer. The gap between them decides one crew or two.
- Ask the venue about loading and where sound can be taken from.
Butterworth is on the Penang mainland, across the strait from George Town. If your event stays in Butterworth, planning is simple. If any part is on the island, the crossing is the main thing to plan.
What makes Butterworth the gateway?
Butterworth is the mainland end of the historic ferry route to George Town. The Sultan Abdul Halim ferry terminal is next to the Penang Sentral complex, which connects to a bus terminal and the Butterworth KTM station. So guests and crew often arrive here by train or bus before crossing.
Away from the terminal, Butterworth has industrial estates, temples, halls and festival grounds. It also has the Butterworth Art Walk, a mural lane that has hosted markets and crowds.
What is different about filming here?
The ferry carries people, not vehicles. The current crossing carries pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles only.
Services run daily, from 06:30 from Butterworth and 07:00 from George Town, with the last departures at 23:00 and 23:30. For a crew van and cases, we plan the Penang Bridge or the Second Bridge. Ask Penang Port whether camera cases may travel as hand luggage on foot.
A day split across two sides. A common case is a ceremony or company event in Butterworth with a dinner or hotel function on the island. That is two setups and a transfer. Use the simultaneous coverage planner to see whether one operator can do it.
Large or industrial venues. Halls, factory sites and festival grounds often have a long walk from the loading point to the stage. Ask the venue where equipment can be unloaded and whether a separate sound feed is available.
What should you tell us?
How many people attend each part, whether anyone travels from across the water, and which moments must be recorded in full, such as a speech, a blessing or a prize-giving. These answers decide how many camera operators you need and how the hours are spent.
Planning checklist for Butterworth
- Write down which venues are on the mainland and which are on the island.
- Add the start time of each part and the gap between them.
- Ask each venue about loading, power and camera positions. Our venue filming questions checklist lists them.
- Use the outstation filming budget worksheet if the crew will travel in.
- For the island part, see George Town.
How an enquiry for Butterworth works
Send the venues, date and order of the day by WhatsApp. We confirm the crew and travel for your venues and date, and an enquiry does not reserve the date. For the whole state, see event videography in Penang. Church and temple days inland are covered under Bukit Mertajam, and the event videography service page lists what we film.
Tell us where each part of your day is and which side of the water it is on. We confirm the crew and travel.
