In short
- Balik Pulau is on the island's southwest side, behind the central hills from George Town.
- In durian season, roads into town can jam, so plan the arrival time.
- Orchard and kampung venues need a check on the road to the gate, power, shade and a quiet spot for speeches.
- Open-air events need a sound and rain plan.
Balik Pulau is the quiet side of Penang Island, where events happen at orchards, kampung houses and retreats. The filming plan starts with the road in, the facilities and the season.
What kinds of events happen in Balik Pulau?
The town is known for durian and nutmeg farms, so orchard feasts, family gatherings, kampung kenduri and retreat events are typical. Most have no ballroom, which means open land, uneven ground and mixed ages.
What is different about filming here?
Behind the hills. Balik Pulau lies on the far side of the central hills from George Town. Roads meet at the town centre: one climbs east over the hills towards Paya Terubong and Bukit Jambul, one runs north towards Teluk Bahang, and one follows the coast south. Equipment from the mainland therefore crosses a bridge and then the island, which we build into the arrival time. If the same day includes the airport side, see Bayan Lepas.
Durian season. The season runs roughly from May to August. A Bernama report from June 2025 described jams from Balik Pulau towards Teluk Bahang during school holidays. If your event falls then, tell us the date so the crew arrives well ahead of the guests.
Orchards and farms. Ask what the site offers: a hard road to the gate, a place to park and unload, shade, power, and a quiet spot for speeches. Our venue filming questions checklist covers them.
Sound outdoors. Wind, birds and roadside noise reach the microphones. Close microphones on speakers help, and the audio brief builder lists what to specify.
How do you plan for rain and comfort?
Rain can come quickly and midday sun is harsh, so agree a sheltered spot for the key moments using the weather and venue-change plan. Ask the venue about walkways, toilets and shelter for elderly guests, and tell us where the crew should keep clear.
A short planning checklist
- Share the exact venue and a map pin.
- Ask about the road, parking, power and shade.
- Decide where speeches and the main moments take place.
- Agree a rain plan with the venue.
- Ask about venue rules on filming guests and on drones. Our drone guide explains why approval comes first.
How does an enquiry work?
Send the venue, date and order of the day by WhatsApp, and we confirm the crew and the travel involved. For a family gathering see family reunion videography. The Penang guide covers the wider state.
Tell us the exact venue with a map pin, the date and what facilities it has. We confirm the crew and the travel involved for Balik Pulau.
