In short
- Bukit Mertajam is on the Penang mainland, so island and mainland plans stay separate.
- Each July the St Anne's feast fills the basilica area for about ten days, and roads close on its final weekend.
- Home, temple or church, and dinner often fall in one day, so overlaps decide whether you need a second operator.
- Ask the temple committee or church office where cameras may stand.
Bukit Mertajam is on the Penang mainland, so we plan it as a mainland event, not as part of the island. What changes filming most here is how many places your day moves through, and whether it falls in July.
What is Bukit Mertajam like for events?
Two places of worship set the calendar. The Minor Basilica of St Anne is about 2 km from the town centre, and the Tua Pek Kong (Hock Teik Cheng Sin) temple stands on Jalan Pasar in the town centre.
Speakers at a family or community event may switch between English, Malay, Mandarin, Hokkien and Tamil. Tell us who gives the important words. Subtitles and translation are available on request and we confirm them for your date.
What is different about filming here?
The St Anne’s feast. The Novena and feast ran from 17 to 26 July in 2026, with more than 100,000 pilgrims estimated by a church deacon and over 25,000 in the 1.6 km candlelight procession through Jalan Kulim, Jalan Kampung Baru and Jalan Berjaya. The 2025 schedule listed Masses in English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. If your wedding or family event falls in this week, ask about road closures and unloading before you fix crew arrival. See filming processions and moving community events.
Temple and church rules. Ask the temple committee or the church office where cameras may stand and which moments stay off camera. Our guides on filming at a place of worship and filming heritage and clan association events list the questions.
Several places in one day. A blessing at home, a service at a temple or church, and a dinner at a hall each need setup time, and the drive takes part of the coverage hours. Our simultaneous coverage planner shows when one operator is enough.
Island and mainland stay separate. If part of your day is on the island, such as a dinner in George Town, we plan that crossing as its own step.
Planning checklist for Bukit Mertajam
- List every location in order, with a start time and the guests present.
- Mark the parts that overlap. Those decide whether you need a second operator.
- Ask each venue where the crew may stand and where we can take sound from the PA.
- Decide what stays complete, such as a speech or blessing, and what can be a highlight. See the guide to choosing finished videos.
- Note any area where filming is not allowed.

How an enquiry for Bukit Mertajam works
Message us the venues, date and order of the day. We confirm the crew and travel for your venues and date, and an enquiry does not reserve the date.
For the wider state, see event videography in Penang; for the other mainland towns, see Butterworth and Batu Kawan. If your guests come from across the state line, see Kedah. Our event videography service page explains what we film.
Send us the venue names, the date and the order of the day. We confirm the crew and travel.
