In short
- Ferries leave from Mersing in Johor and Tanjung Gemok in Pahang, and the timetable changes by month.
- Villages such as Tekek, Air Batang and Salang are far apart, so name the exact one.
- Plan for the crew to arrive a day early, because monsoon months bring cancelled or late sailings.
Tioman can be filmed, but the boat comes first. The crew and equipment have to cross the sea before anything is recorded, so settle the crossing, then the venue, then the coverage.
Which jetty, and which village?
Ferries run from Mersing in Johor and from Tanjung Gemok in Pahang. Bluewater Express is the main operator on both. Tanjung Gemok usually has fewer sailings but is less affected by tides. Mersing is closer for people coming from Johor and Singapore.
Ferries stop at several villages, including Genting, Paya, Tekek, Air Batang (ABC) and Salang. They are not close together, so tell us the exact village or resort. The crossing is about one and a half to two hours, depending on the drop-off point, according to one guide, so confirm it for your sailing.
What does the monsoon change?
Cancellations become common in the monsoon months, and Mersing sailings are often delayed by tides or weather. One guide says the timetable for a month is released in the middle of the month before, and that tickets sell out on weekends and school holidays.
So for an important event, we suggest the crew arrives a day early, and we agree what happens if a crossing is missed. See booking video for an island event with limited transport windows and the weather planning guide.
How does equipment travel?
Camera cases, tripods and lights go on the boat with us. Ask the ferry operator about baggage and cargo limits before the date is fixed. Beach and open-air venues bring wind, sun and generator noise, so ask the resort for a covered backup space and where the power comes from. Our guide to filming a beach or island event goes through this.
A drone needs aviation approval first, and a resort or marine area may have its own rules. We also plan ground shots.
What about flying in?
Tioman has an airstrip at Kampung Tekek. A 2023 report mentioned four flights a week from Subang and a plan to lengthen the runway, while a later guide says flights have stopped. Check with the airline, then tell us the arrival you plan.
A checklist for Tioman
- Confirm the village or resort, the date and the programme hours.
- Choose the jetty and a sailing with a spare day if the event cannot move.
- Ask where the crew will stay, and whether rooms are held.
- Ask the venue about power, a covered backup and filming rules.
- Decide the films that matter most, so a late boat does not cost you the key moment.
What to send us
The village or resort, the date and the coverage you want, on WhatsApp or through the event video brief builder. An enquiry does not reserve the date. The outstation filming budget worksheet lists the travel items to ask about. For the mainland coast, see Kuantan and event videography in Pahang.
Tell us the village or resort, the date and the coverage you want. We confirm the crew and the island transfer for your date.
