Event videography in Kuching, Sarawak

Your event is in Kuching, and you want several rooms, the weather and mixed languages handled well.

Share your date and area, and we will suggest coverage and confirm what is possible.

In short

  • A large centre can run several sessions at once, so decide early which rooms need their own camera.
  • The waterfront, heritage buildings and the Santubong cultural village each have a different host to ask.
  • Rain can arrive in any month, and the wetter spell is usually November to February.

Kuching is Sarawak’s capital, so events here range from conferences and hotel dinners to Gawai gatherings and family banquets.

What is different about filming in Kuching?

Several rooms at once. The Borneo Convention Centre Kuching lists a Great Hall, halls that can be partitioned and combined, and meeting rooms. A keynote, a breakout and an exhibition can run at the same time, and one camera cannot be in all of them.

Decide which sessions need a full recording. Our simultaneous coverage planner helps you list them.

Wet months. Ask for a covered backup if your event includes a car park arrival, a garden or the riverside. November to February is usually the wetter spell, though rain can come in any month. Our weather and venue-change plan shows what to settle.

Many languages. Malay, English and Mandarin carry most events, and Hokkien, Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau and Orang Ulu languages are also heard. If speeches use more than one language, plan captions early with the caption and language planner.

Waterfront, heritage and Santubong

Kuching events often use places outside a hotel ballroom. The waterfront runs along the Sarawak River. The Sarawak Cultural Village is at Santubong, a drive from the city.

Each of these has its own host. Ask the waterfront or heritage site manager what filming needs approval, and ask a festival organiser about crew access and sound feeds. Plan crew movement between the city and Santubong as a separate leg.

What should you check with the venue?

  • Whether outside videographers must notify the venue, and by when.
  • Where camera positions and cable runs are allowed.
  • Whether the in-house audio-visual team can give us a clean sound feed from the stage.
  • Load-in time, and which entrance the crew should use.
  • Whether the crew can visit the rooms before the day.
  • Who at the venue we can reach on the day if the programme changes.

Our venue filming questions checklist turns these into a list you can send.

Questions people ask

Can you film a conference with several rooms running at once?
Yes, with a camera operator for each room that needs a full recording. Tell us which sessions must be recorded in full and which can share a camera. Multi-camera crews are available on request, and we tell you what one crew can cover.
Does the Borneo Convention Centre allow an outside videographer?
Ask the centre's events team in writing, and ask early. Request the current guidelines for camera positions, cable runs and load-in. Send us the reply and we plan around it, including a clean sound feed from the house audio-visual team.
Can you film a Gawai open house or a Chinese family dinner in Kuching?
Yes, when the host family or community is comfortable with it. Sarawak's government has held public Gawai open houses at the convention centre, so ask the host which parts are public and which are private. Tell us the languages used, and we plan captions where you want them.
What do we do if it rains during a riverside or garden event?
Agree a covered backup before the day. Kuching has heavy rain at times, and November to February is usually the wetter spell. Tell us where guests would move, and we prepare equipment and timing for both plans.
