In short
- Serian is a Bidayuh centre, about 60 km from Kuching, on the road to the Tebedu border.
- Villages, churches and primary schools line the Serian to Tebedu road, so many events are in village halls and homes.
- Your family or community tells us the customs, the language and the moments to protect.
- Check space, parking and power at a home or small hall before the day.
An event in Serian can be filmed by a crew that travels in, and the village or hall matters more than the town. Tell us the customs and the order of the day, and we plan around them.
Where is Serian, and what are events like?
Serian is a district about 60 km from Kuching. The Sarawak Tourism Board describes it as a lively centre for the Bidayuh community, with pepper farms, fruit orchards and rural scenery. It became its own division in 2015.
Federal Route 21 runs about 50 km from Serian to Tebedu on the Indonesian border. Along it you find scattered houses, orchards, churches and primary schools. So events here are often in a village hall, a church, a school or a family home, rather than a hotel ballroom. Weddings, thanksgiving services, school events and community gatherings are common examples.
What is different about the Tebedu road?
Villages branch off the main road. Side roads lead to places such as Tebakang, Riih and Mongkos. A venue that is “in Serian” may be one main-road drive plus a village road. Send the village name and a map pin, so we can check access and the carrying distance for cases and stands.
Space can be tight. A family home or small hall has limited room for guests, cameras and lights. Tell us the room size and how many people will attend, and we plan equipment to fit.
Kuching is close. Serian is near enough that the question is often the road and the hours, not a flight. Read local crew or travelling crew for your event for how that choice works, and travel and accommodation costs for outstation filming for what affects the quote.
What matters most when the crew comes from outside?
Customs and language come from you. Tell us what is said, in which language, and which moments the family cares about. Our guide to filming Gawai community celebrations shows how we think about community-led days.
Venue basics. Ask the host where power points are, whether there is a sound system, and where the crew can park. See a venue sound-system feed and a recording backup.
A short checklist for your Serian event
- The village or hall, and how to reach it from the main road.
- Date, start time and the order of the programme.
- Languages spoken, and any words or blessings that must be heard clearly.
- Who may be filmed, and any private moments to leave out: see people who do not want to appear.
- The films you want: see highlight film, full recording and raw footage explained.
How does an enquiry for Serian work?
Tell us the venue and date, and we confirm the crew and travel for Serian. An enquiry does not reserve a date; a booking is confirmed once scope and terms are agreed. You can start with the event video brief.
For nearby events, see Kuching and Kota Samarahan. The wider view is on our Sarawak page.
Send us the village or hall, the date and the order of the programme. We will ask about customs and language before we plan the crew.
