In short
- Sarikei is a Rajang River town, linked by road to Sibu, whose airport is the nearest.
- One event can span the town, the riverfront and a longhouse or country park.
- Chinese, Iban, Melanau and Malay families may share a guest list and several languages.
- Ask early whether the venue has internet before planning online sharing of files.
An event in Sarikei can be filmed by a crew that travels in, and the plan depends on where each part of the day happens. This town on the Rajang River draws events along the waterfront, in the town centre and out in the countryside.
What kind of place is Sarikei?
Sarikei is known as Pineapple Town, and a large pineapple statue stands on its waterfront. The town is linked by road to Sibu, whose airport is the nearest one, and boats run on the Rajang River. In the wider Sarikei Division, Iban are about half of the people, followed by Melanau, Malay, Bidayuh and Chinese. In town, Foochow influence shows in local food such as kompia and kampua mee.
That mix shapes events. A wedding may combine a church or temple service with a dinner. A community day may centre on a longhouse. Languages change from table to table.
What changes for filming in Sarikei?
Spread-out venues. The Nyelong Esplanade is a riverside park near the town centre, Sebangkoi Country Park is about 30 km away and has a resort beside it, and Rumah Nyuka Longhouse is a well-known longhouse nearby. If your day uses more than one of these, we plan each as its own block and agree travel time between them.
Long days. A morning ceremony and an evening dinner make a long shift. Tell us the real times so the quote reflects the hours and any overnight stay. Our guide to travel and accommodation costs for outstation filming shows what moves the quote.
Chinese community dinners. Association and family dinners often include speeches, toasts and performances. Read filming Chinese New Year association dinners and ask the hall about its sound feed. For a longhouse, see filming Gawai community celebrations.
