In short

  • Weddings and community events often move between homes, churches, halls and restaurants.
  • The Borneo Cultural Festival filled the riverfront for ten days in 2026, with evening programmes.
  • Sibu is the river hub for the Rajang, so guests may come by road or river as well as by air.

Sibu is a river town in central Sarawak, and its events are often led by families, churches, clan associations or the town’s festivals. Tell us the venues and the date, and we confirm the crew and the travel.

What is different about filming in Sibu?

Several languages in one event. Sibu has a large Foochow-speaking Chinese community, with Iban, Malay and Melanau neighbours. A wedding or anniversary may have speeches in Mandarin, Foochow, English, Malay or Iban. Tell us who speaks, and decide whether you want speeches recorded in full or captioned. The caption and language planner helps you write that down.

Many stops in a day. A family event may start at home, move to a church or hall and end at a restaurant. Give us each address and time so we can check travel between them. For weddings, see wedding videography.

The Borneo Cultural Festival and the riverfront

The Borneo Cultural Festival is Sibu’s biggest annual stage. In 2026 it ran from 3 to 12 September at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1, with dance, a fire show and groups from Brunei and across Malaysia. The Melanau giant swing, the itut, stood on the same ground and opened in the evenings.

Evening programmes mean low light, mixed stage sound and crowds. Plan a wet-weather alternative with the weather and venue-change plan and read our guide to filming an outdoor event with a wet-weather plan. For community events, see community event videography.

The terminal and the river towns

Sibu is the starting point for the Rajang. The express boat terminal once sent many boats upriver, but a 2024 report counted fewer than six express boats left after the Sibu to Kapit road opened in 2021. Guests from river towns may now come by road, so ask how they are travelling.

Ask the family which route guests will take, and agree what the crew films first if arrivals run late. Equipment moving upriver needs its own plan, covered on the Kapit page. Events towards the coast are on the Sarikei page.

A short planning checklist

  1. Write down every venue and the time you need filming at each.
  2. List the languages used and who will speak.
  3. For outdoor or festival events, ask the organiser about the stage, sound system, night lighting and a rain plan.
  4. Decide which parts need a full recording and which can be a short highlight.
  5. Tell us which guests arrive from other towns, and when.

The outstation filming budget worksheet lists the travel items to expect. For the wider view, see Sarawak. A booking is confirmed once scope and terms are agreed.

Send us the venues in or around Sibu, the date and the moments you want filmed. We confirm the crew and the travel for Sibu.

Questions people ask

Can you film a Sibu wedding that uses more than one language?
Yes. Tell us which ceremonies are planned, which languages the speeches use and who can explain the key moments. Captions or translated subtitles are available on request.
Can you film an event at the Borneo Cultural Festival?
Yes, with the organiser's agreement. The 2026 festival ran from 3 to 12 September at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1, with performers from Sarawak and abroad. Ask the organiser about crew access, stage sound and night lighting, and tell us which performances you want.
Can we film the giant itut swing?
Ask the Melanau group that runs it first. In 2026 the Kampung Nangka Melanau Welfare Association managed the swing at the festival and its own crew supervised safety. Agree camera positions and who may be filmed on the swing before the evening.
Can we film in Sibu and a nearby town on the same day?
Often yes. Tell us every place and the time you need us there, and we check whether one crew can cover it. Fewer express boats run from Sibu now, so ask how guests and equipment will travel between towns.
