In short
- Miri is a gateway to Mulu, Niah, Lambir Hills and the Kelabit Highlands.
- Plan any park or interior trip as a separate day, with its own transport and approvals.
- Guests may arrive from Brunei or from across Sarawak, which affects timing and languages.
Miri is on Sarawak’s northern coast, close to the Brunei border. Tell us your venue and date, and we confirm the crew and the travel.
What kinds of events are planned in Miri?
Company events are common in Miri, an oil and gas city. Families and communities also plan weddings, reunions and festival gatherings, where several languages may be in use, such as Malay, English, Mandarin and Foochow. Gawai and temple festivals may be part of your event.
Company events fit corporate event videography. Family gatherings fit family reunion videography, and community events fit community event videography. Hotels, resorts and malls in the city are the usual indoor settings.
Miri as a gateway
Miri is the usual starting point for Gunung Mulu National Park and Bario in the Kelabit Highlands, both served by small aircraft. Lambir Hills and Niah are reached from the Miri side by road.
If your event includes a trip to one of these places, plan it as its own day. Settle these first:
- Who manages the place, and what filming or group visits need approval.
- How far ahead to ask, because the lead time can differ from a city event.
- How crew and equipment get there, including baggage limits on small aircraft, and what happens if a flight is delayed.
- A rain backup. The weather and venue-change plan helps.
Our guide to permits and permissions for destination filming explains how to ask.
River events towards Marudi
The Baram River, towards Marudi, is an event setting of its own. The 2026 Baram Regatta in Marudi had a decorated boat parade, a powerboat race and traditional paddling races. A river event needs a boat plan, a safety plan for equipment near water, and a decision on where the cameras stand on the bank.
Guests from Brunei and across Sarawak
Miri is close to Brunei, and guests often come across the border for weddings and company events. Border crossings and mixed languages can shift timing, so keep the first filmed moment flexible.
A short planning checklist
- Confirm the venue, date and who approves filming on site.
- Decide whether any part of the event leaves the city.
- List the languages used, and whether you want captions.
- Agree the films you need, for example a highlight film and full speeches.
- Plan a rain or delay backup.
Our venue filming questions checklist lists the questions for company sites. For travel items, see the outstation filming budget worksheet.
The event video brief builder turns your notes into a message. For nearby events, see Bintulu, or the Sarawak page for the whole state.
Send us the venue, the date and any trip outside the city you want filmed. We confirm the crew and the travel for Miri.
